Writing

If, like me, you are concerned about what is unfolding in Gaza, please consider contacting your MP  to take action.

Below is an open letter to the UK government. In the letter I ask three things:

  1. To acknowledge that Israel’s warfare methods in Gaza are consistent with genocide.
  2. To exert diplomatic pressure on Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza through the complete suspension of military supplies.
  3. To recognise Palestine as a State, as a matter of urgency.
This letter in no way condones the actions of Hamas on 7th October 2023. However, in yoga there is the principle of ahimsa, or non-harming, either by action or inaction. The events unfolding in Gaza today should not be ignored.

Open Letter

Dear MPs

I am writing to you as my representative to express my deep concern about the events unfolding in Gaza and to request that you urge the UK government to act now to prevent a genocide.

In November 2024 the United Nations Special Committee on Human Rights found Israel’s warfare methods in Gaza consistent with genocide, including use of starvation as a weapon of war. Since 2nd March 2025 Israel has blocked humanitarian aid and fuelled mass starvation, as well as targeting hospitals, and infrastructure. However, the UK government has not yet publicly stated that genocide is occurring.

The UK government suspended arms to Israel in September 2024 yet has since approved $169m worth of military equipment to Israel in the three months following the suspension and that 20 different licences were approved between October and December 2024. As we await the High Court Ruling (Al Haq -v- Secretary of State for Business and Trade) regarding the legality of exporting military supplies to Israel, it has been noted in the House of Commons whether the UK Middle East Minister is “aware that many friends of Israel worldwide, notwithstanding legal definitions, are asking the moral question: when is genocide not genocide?”. As a matter of urgency, the UK government should disclose its risk assessments regarding genocide in Gaza as requested by Amnesty International and over sixty parliamentarians to date.

Moreover, I urge the UK government to press ahead with recognition of a Palestinian State as voted for in October 2014 and pledged in the Labour election manifesto June 2024. This is a crucial time as there is the upcoming UN conference (scheduled for June in New York), to discuss the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion that the Israeli occupation of Gaza is unlawful, and in which other UN members will be discussing Palestinian recognition.

To conclude, my requests are threefold:

  1. To acknowledge that Israel’s warfare methods in Gaza are consistent with genocide.
  2. To exert diplomatic pressure on Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza through the complete suspension of military supplies, among other methods.
  3. To recognise Palestine as a State, as has been agreed by the UK government and as part of the Labour manifesto, as a matter of urgency. The government are working for a “Two State Solution” to this conflict, however, there cannot be a two-state solution if Palestine is not recognised as a state.

Conditions in Gaza have escalated rapidly towards genocide and I urge you, as my representative to act now.

Thank you for your attention.

Yours faithfully,

Genevieve Brown.
